The Office of the Chief Archivist of Lithuania is a government agency, which participates in the shaping of national policy in the field of management and use of documents and archives, as well as implements this policy, supports the Chief Archivist of Lithuania in the carrying-out of state administration of the field of documents and archives.




Gift to Lithuanian Archives from Federal Foreign Office Political Archive of Germany


The Chief Archivist of Lithuania Ramojus Kraujelis was presented with 52 digitized files from Federal Foreign Office Political Archive of Germany by Lithuanian Minister of Foreign Affairs Linas Linkevičius on June 9th. Files contains documents dated from December 1916 to May 1920 and is named „Baltic provinces, the future of Lithuania“. The important document Act of Independence of Lithuania recently discovered in Federal Foreign Office Political Archive of Germany is among those documents. Full and official title of this document is: Cover letter of March 22nd, 1918, by German Foreign Office representative in Vilnius Georg von Bonin to Reich Chancellor von Hertling, forwarding ruling of February 16th, 1918, by Council of Lithuania declaring and notifying independence of Lithuania and requesting for recognition of an independent Lithuanian state. Ruling is written in Lithuanian and German and signed by all 20 members of Council of Lithuania

Regulations of using these documents were set in German embassy note of June 6th, 2017: users may freely access documents in Lithuanian Archives reading rooms and use it for academic research. However, public promotion (including promotion on the internet) is allowed only with permission of Federal Foreign Office Political Archive of Germany. All requests concerning promotion of these documents must be sent through the ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Lithuania.
