The Office of the Chief Archivist of Lithuania is a government agency, which participates in the shaping of national policy in the field of management and use of documents and archives, as well as implements this policy, supports the Chief Archivist of Lithuania in the carrying-out of state administration of the field of documents and archives.

      Preserves documents of regional state, municipal and non-state institutions, enterprises and individuals of the Alytus, Lazdijai, and Varėna districts from 1945 until the present day. Archives is also involved in supervision of records management of local public institutions.

      The document files preserved in Alytus County Archives occupy 1825 linear meters of shelving space and comprise 2 sets of documents:

  • A set of documents relating to the Soviet occupation period (1944–1989): documents created by the local governments that were functioning on the territory of Alytus County – Soviets of Working People’s Deputies of towns and districts, and their executive committees; documents referring to the activities of courts, notary offices, institutions of law and order, culture, health care; also industrial and agricultural enterprises (collective farms and state farms) are kept here for permanent retention. These documents testify to the reality of the “mature socialism” and the development of the socialist society, collectivisation, as well as the scope of building communism;
  • A set of documents relating to the Independence period (since 1990): documents created by district councils and local governments, as well as documents of the offices implementing agricultural reform (the latter documents testify to the beginning of restoration of proprietorship rights to the land, dramatic changes in the activities of collective farms, the start of reforms); documents referring to the activities of self-government institutions in 1990–1994 (they reflect the difficult decisions related to the reform of the industrial and agricultural sectors that had to be taken by the local self-government institutions after the restoration of the independence of the Republic of Lithuania); documents created by the office of the Head of Alytus County Administration in 1995–2010.
