Archives exercises control over records management in major state institutions (the Parliament, Office of the President of Republic of Lithuania, Chancellery of Government, ministries and departments etc.)

It also accumulates and preserves documents of state institutions, popular organizations and Individuals, dating from 1990; provide institutions with consultations on the organization of records management, administration and preservation of documents.

The documents of the Archives occupy more than 1,030 linear metres of shelving space and comprise 4 sets:

Documents of state and governmental institutions, and other public institutions: documents of Lithuanian state authorities, electoral bodies, courts; documents created by audit, environment, finance, tax, culture, education, national security, national defence, social security, communication and telecommunication, health care, law and order, economy, agriculture and other institutions;
Documents of political and public organisations: Lithuanian Reform Movement Sąjūdis, Lithuanian National Union (LTS), National Union of American Lithuanians, Lithuanian Citizens’ Charter, Independence Party, Social Democratic Party of Lithuania (LSDP), Democratic Labour Party of Lithuania (LDDP), Party of Christian Democrats of Lithuania, Union of Modern Christian Democrats of Lithuania (MKDS), Union of Poles in Lithuania (LLS), New Union (Social-liberals);
Private collections. The set comprises documents related to the political and professional activities of the signatories of the Act of 11 March 1990: Vytenis Povilas Andriukaitis, Kazimieras Antanavičius, Virgilijus Juozas Čepaitis, Bronislovas Genzelis, Bronislovas Juozas Kuzmickas, Kazimieras Motieka, Leonas Milčius, Saulius Pečeliūnas, journalist and politician Algimantas Degutis;
Documents of private legal entities.
