2022-10-03

Daina Lozoraitis handed over the originals of the Kybartai acts and other documents preserved by the Lozoraičiai family to the Lithuanian Central State Archives and was awarded the Archivist's badge of honor at the Embassy of the Republic of Lithuania in the Republic of Italy on September 29th, 2022.

Acts of Kybartai - 1940 Documents signed by the President of the Republic of Lithuania, Antanas Smetona, implementing the provision on the transfer of power: Stasys Lozoraitis is appointed as the Prime Minister of Lithuania and is tasked with deputizing for the President. Based on these important documents, it was possible to form a government in exile. For a long time, researchers of Lithuanian history were troubled by the question of where the original documents of the Kybartai could be stored. This secret was recetly revealed – documents were stored in the Lozoraitis family archive in Rome.

The connections between Lithuanian State Archives and former ambassador, extraordinary and plenipotentiary of the Republic of Lithuania to the Holy See and a member of the board of the Lithuanian community in Italy Kazys Lozoraitis were established in 2003 when he visited the archive for the first time. Kazys Lozoraitis handed over the written documents, as well as photographs and videotapes, of the head of Lithuanian diplomacy Stasys Lozoraitis and the Lithuanian diplomatic service abroad to the archive in 2006. Later, the Lozoraičiai family transferred other documents of the Lithuanian diplomatic service preserved by the family to the archive. However there were no originals of Kybartai Acts among the documents transferred between 2006 and 2008. Lithuanian archives only preserved certified copies of Kybartai acts. Attempts were made to explain where and how these important documents for the state of Lithuania could have disappeared, and various versions were put forward.

Only recently, after contacting the historian Daina Lozoraitis, a descendant of the Lozoraičiai dynasty of diplomats, it became clear that the originals of the Kybartai acts were kept in the Lozoraičiai house in Rome. Thanks to Dina Lozoraitis, the Kybartai acts are returning to Lithuania. At the same time, other important documents including diaries, photographs and film material were transferred.

During the event, the guests were greeted by Laura Tilūnaitė, the adviser of the embassy, who reminded that the Kybartai Acts can also be considered as constitutional documents establishing the continuity of the independent state of Lithuania.

Dalius Žižys, director of the Lithuanian Central State Archives, and ambassador and historian dr. Vytautas Žalys also participated in the event.

Presenting Daina Lozoraitis with the archivist's badge of honor, Dalius Žižys noted that the historian Daina Lozoraitis, a descendant of the Lozoraičiai dynasty of diplomats, always cherished family traditions, took care of the documents of the Lithuanian diplomatic service and the Lozoraičiai family that remained in Rome. He emphasized that the contribution of the Lozoraičiai family in preserving important documents for the state of Lithuania is an excellent example of patriotism.

Ambassador and historian dr. Vytautas Žalys spoke about the significance of the documents to be transferred, the search of Kybartai acts and was happy about the meaningful gift to Lithuania.

The event was attended by representatives of the Lithuanian community in Italy, Italian society and Vatican Radio.

Renginyje dalyvavo Italijos lietuvių bendruomenės, italų visuomenės ir Vatikano radijo atstovai.
