The Office of the Chief Archivist of Lithuania is a government agency, which participates in the shaping of national policy in the field of management and use of documents and archives, as well as implements this policy, supports the Chief Archivist of Lithuania in the carrying-out of state administration of the field of documents and archives.

The Lithuanian Independence act of 16th of february was returned to Germany

The Office of the Chief Archivist of Lithuania returned the Lithuanian Independence act of 16th of february to the Political Archive of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Germany. The return was stipulated in the agreement signed by the Federal Minister of Foreign Affairs of Germany Sigmar Gabriel, and the then Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Lithuania Linas Antanas Linkevičius on the 5th of october, 2017.

The resolution signed by the Council of Lithuania on the restoration of the independent state of Lithuania, also known as the Lithuanian Independence Act of 16th of February, was transferred to Lithuania for five years. Independence Act of 16th of February was exhibited in the House of Signatories and the The Historical Presidential Palace in Kaunas.

The Council of Lithuania chaired by Jonas Basanavičius signed the resolution on the restoration of the independent state of Lithuania on the 16th of february 1918. Historians believe that several documents may have been signed that day, but the whereabouts of other documents are still unknown.
